Cambridge University Library MS Add.3056 probably dates from around 1610, but most of the music is for a seven-course lute. The copyist drew on a number of continental and English sources, including John Danyel’s song book of 1606. This unusual piece, untitled and anonymous, is not found in any other source, but surely deserves a place in the repertoire of modern lutenists. Written at the bottom of the page is what appears to be an alternative text for bars 3 and 4 – I have included it in the same way so you can choose which version to play.
